Welcome to Black Freebie Friday! I hope everyone had a fabulous feast yesterday and was able to find a few minutes to reflect and “give thanks”.
While many of you will be dressing your Christmas tree today, I’m sure there’s just as many who will be starting their day a tad bit earlier than the rest of us. For those of you who are braving the crowds for all the Black Friday sales, I tip my hat to you. I am most definitely NOT a morning person. Unless you refer to “morning” as 12 a.m.!
Since I know many of you get your creative mojo in wee hours of the night, I know how precious those few uninterrupted hours can be. And since we’re entering the busiest time of the year, we all need to make the most of our creative time. After all, Christmas is less than a month away!
Which is why I love our Gift Trios feature in our November/December issue. If you’re looking to save time and supplies, why not make a matching tag, bag and card? Incorporate the same product into three different projects and take the guesswork out of the equation.
I love how perfectly these projects coordinate with one another. Who wouldn’t love to receive these gems for the holidays? If you’d like to download the pattern for Wendy’s cute box, click HERE.
In honor of Black Friday, I’ve got two prize packages that you don’t even have to leave the house to fight over! Leave a comment telling me if you plan on shopping ’til you drop today or taking it easy and enjoying the long weekend. I’ll pick two winners to receive a copy of Holidays Cards & More, Vol. 4 and Making Memories Flowers stamp set. (I can totally see these stamps used as snowflakes, wreaths, poinsettia flowers, etc!) All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Sunday, Nov. 29.
Happy Black Friday!
Kelly

Although the holiday has no real patriotic significance in Mexico, May 5th has become a very festive excuse for a celebration in the U.S.
Just like we’re all Irish on St. Patrick’s Day and German for Oktoberfest, Cinco de Mayo is a great reason to enjoy the culture and traditions of Mexico at least one time each year.
When I think of Mexico, I think VIBRANT! Just like that – in all caps with an exclamation point. To me, it’s an inspirational feast for the senses in deeply saturated colors, spirited sounds from a mariachi band, and the flavorful zing of lime, jalapenos and cilantro.
I love Cinco de Mayo certainly because Mexican food is one of my favorites, and another part of it is my discovery years ago that Mexican beer with a slice of lime is the only way to go (friends from my Wisconsin hometown will probably never forgive me for that).
It’s also the eve of my birthday and has become a convenient way to stretch things just a wee bit longer. Throw in Mother’s Day, which falls on the weekend afterward, and I’ve got a completely valid reason to help myself to a deliciously generous helping of fun.
Wait. Did I say delicious? And Mexican food? I’ll be going to a Cinco de Mayo party at a friend’s house and want to bring something creative. There’s a quick recipe and project from Paper Crafts Gourmet that fits my need perfectly: Mexican Bean Soup and a clever way to pack it up as dinner in a basket:
The recipe is a breeze! Combine 15 oz. cans (including all juices) of pinto beans, kidney beans, navy beans, corn, and Ro-tel or diced tomatoes with chiles, a packet of taco seasoning, half a packet of dry ranch salad dressing mix, and ½ c. water in a slow cooker for several hours. Then serve with grated cheese, sour cream and tortilla chips. Delicious!
Since I’m into the vibrance of Cinco de Mayo, I’ll wrap my cans and packets in some brightly colored paper and load them into an equally colorful basket. Fun, right? I hope you have a reason to whip this up for the host of a Cinco de Mayo celebration you’re attending!
Olé!

I just love the Just Desserts feature in the May/June issue of Paper Crafts. It’s so yummy, delicious, sweet, divine… well you get the idea. Every project is eye candy and many of the projects look literally good enough to eat. As I took a closer look, I was reminded of how many supplies I have in my stash that would add the perfect finishing touch to sweet-themed projects:
- Glitter, beads, small brads or tiny punched shapes can be used as faux candy sprinkles.
- Embossing powder, especially the puffy kind, makes great icing, cotton candy or marshmallow crème.
- Buttons or rhinestones can be used as candy or that perfect “cherry on top”.
- Texture paste makes great frosting on a cupcake.
- Rickrack makes a great faux icing trim.
- Dimensional glaze placed over brown cardstock looks like gooey chocolate sauce.
- Felt works great as a scoop of ice cream.
The possibilities are endless. Sometimes by looking at our supplies in new ways, we’re inspired to create some really awesome projects. Here’s the “Sweet Soda Card” (p. 56) I made for the Just Desserts feature:
And if I haven’t made your mouth water enough already, make sure to check out our amazing book Paper Crafts Gourmet – complete with actual recipes and coordinating paper crafted projects.
So whether you heading to your kitchen or your paper crafting studio, you now have plenty of ideas to whip up something delicious!
Enjoy!
