Welcome to Magazine Monday! Did everyone have a good weekend? I hope you found some time to 1). go out and buy our new special issue Go-to Sketches, 2). sit down and devour this magazine and 3). create your own projects from some 66 inspiring sketches.
If you did get crafty this weekend, why not submit some of your entries? Just a reminder that our submissions deadline for our Holiday Cards & More, Volume 5 issue is tonight at midnight (MDT). Click HERE for more information!
Even though our Go-to Sketches Week is officially over, I’m going to squeeze in one more day of sketch-filled fun. Three weeks ago we launched our first ever Go-to Sketch Challenge. With sketches from Paper Crafts Go-to Gals Teri Anderson and Maren Benedict as inspiration, submissions poured in for all occasions. We picked these four entries (two per sketch) as our final winners!
Editor’s Note: Vanessa was just published for the very first time in our May/June 2010 issue! Not only that, her Rainbow of Butterflies Card (p. 74) made the cover! Click HERE to see cover girl Vanessa literally jumping for joy when her issue arrives in the mail.
Congratulations, ladies! Each of you has won either a one-year subscription to Paper Crafts or the special issue of your choice. I’ll be contacting you shortly to discuss your prizes. If you’re interested in seeing all the projects from our first Go-to Sketch Challenge, please visit our gallery HERE.
Wanna join the fun and participate in our next challenge? We just launched our bling-inspired April Gallery Challenge last Monday. This two-week challenge will run through midnight (MDT) on Monday, April 19. Click HERE to upload your sparkly entries today!
P.S. It’s time to announce each of the three winners from Cath’s Go-to Gals & Friends Blog Hop post, Kim Kesti’s Over the Top Inspiration post, Jennifer’s Behind the Lens post and my It’s a Sketch World After All post!

We try not to, but sometimes we get so focused on publishing our magazines that we lose sight of the final product once it’s “out there.” We’re so used to Christmas in July and Mother’s Day in December that we’re always well on our way to the next inspiring issue.
That wasn’t the case with Go-to Sketches. From the very first moment we sat down to discuss the concept, we were giddy with anticipation. It all came together so perfectly, including the photo shoot that coincided with our annual editorial board meeting. As Paper Crafts Go-to Gal Teri Anderson said, it was an instant connection for our newly-minted Go-to Gals even though they had never been all together as a group before.
Oh, the laughter! The teasing!
And, of course, the primping. Since these six lovely ladies had to pose not only for their official headshots (the black and whites we use here and in the magazine), but also the colorful opener shots AND group shot for Go-to Sketches, you can only imagine the quick changes and hair brushing going on.
Then it was on to the individual shots for the section opening pages. Not only were there six boisterous Go-to Gals in the studio, there was also an audience of editors to help keep things lively.
And here’s your insider secret for the day: although the final shots in the issue are just beautiful and appear effortless, each one was meticulously arranged and checked on the monitor.
It was only after their shots were complete that the Go-to Gals remembered to have a quick bite to eat. After all, we literally whisked them straight from the airport right to the studio and then ordered them to smile pretty.
This has truly been a fun and fulfilling journey bringing this very special issue from early concept last August to the newsstand a few weeks ago. Your other insider secret for the day: we’ve got something else up our collective sleeves for later this summer, so you might want to hang around and find out more. Shhhhhhhh. Don’t tell anyone, though.
If you haven’t already gotten your copy of Go-to Sketches, you can check out our sneak peek HERE. (Psst…today’s the last day for the 20% off plus free shipping offer! Just enter the promotion code “SKETCH20” HERE.)
I’m sending heartfelt thanks to our fantastic group of Go-to Gals for making this week so much fun with all the blog hopping and exclusive new projects using some of the sketches from this issue, because we sure couldn’t have done this without the group effort. You ladies are the very best!
And since our readers are the very best, too, I’ve got three more copies of Go-to Sketches to give away! Leave a comment telling me your favorite aspect of this promotional week (so far!). All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Friday, April 9.
P.S. The fun is just beginning! Hop over to Moxie Fab World as Cath talks about stretching a sketch to suit different styles, purposes, occasions, holidays, gender, age, etc. And the Go-to Gals each take a single sketch and turn it six different ways to create six unique new projects!
Who’s ready for some fun?
I’m always up for a good time, and I know you are, too, so let’s get this party rollin’!
In celebration of our new special issue, Go-to Sketches, the Paper Crafts Go-to Gals have got some fun up their sleeves, beginning with these inspiring projects from this ultra inspiring issue. Check it:
Since Go-to Sketches is all about gaining inspiration from a sketch, the Go-to Gals have not only posted the sketches from which these cards were created, but they’ve got a brand new project created just for you based on the same sketch. AND, they’ve asked five of their friends to do the same thing!
So, leave a comment here saying which of these projects inspire you the most and why, click on each of these links:
…then click on the five links of each of their friends. Visit all the blogs, gain a TON of inspiration and leave a comment on each blog for a chance to win one of three copies of Go-to Sketches. If you do the math as I have, that gives you 37 chances to win!
As in, leave a comment here + 6 comments on the Go-to Gals’ blogs + 30 comments on their friends’ blogs = 37 big chances!
The comment-to-win ends at midnight (MDT) on Wednesday, April 7, so you better get hoppin’!
Let the inspiration begin,
Welcome to Magazine Monday! Today we’re kicking off our exciting Go-to Sketches Week here, on Moxie Fab World and each of our Paper Crafts Go-to Gals’ blogs.
All week long we’ll be taking you inside the pages of our new special issue Go-to Sketches. We started with 66 sketches and then let our designers go to work in creating 282 unique projects. Who knew one sketch could have so many possibilities? We were blown away by all of the different interpretations and couldn’t wait to share them with all of you!
Today we’re going behind the scenes of one very “colorful” photo shoot. By now you probably know we work 6-7 months in advance. Hence our current call for submissions for Holiday Cards & More, Volume 5. So because of this strict production schedule, it was last September that we were concepting Go-to Sketches. Fortunately, our yearly editorial board meeting just happened to fall around this time. With our six Go-to Gals flying in for the meeting, we decided to make the most of our 48 hours together and threw in a photo shoot.
We knew Matt had an all-white theme planned for this issue, so we told each Go-to Gal to come dressed in a bright, vibrant color. The editors were removed from this conversation, but apparently there was much discussion between them about who would wear what color, how they would wear their hair and just how big they should go with the accessories. (From Jessica’s post last week, we know her philosophy on this topic: the bigger, the better!)
To see more individual and group outtakes, make sure you visit each of the gals’ blogs. They’re also talking about the photo shoot from their own perspective, so I’m sure it will be interesting and full of juicy details! (Hopefully they’ll be kind to us editors…especially since we were all in the background saying things like, “Smile, Kim! Turn your head, Teri! Stop giggling, Maren!”
Wanna win a copy of Go-to Sketches? Go visit their blogs and then come back here to tell me your favorite juicy detail revealed. From your comments, I’ll pick three people to win a copy of Go-to Sketches! All comments must be received by midnight (MDT) on Tuesday, April 6. And check back with us tomorrow when Cath announces the Go-to Gals & Friends Blog Hop. There will be lots of inspiration and lots of chances to win more copies of Go-to Sketches!
P.S. We just launched our April Gallery Challenge! Since diamonds are a girl’s best friend, we want to see your projects that incorporate bling, glitter and anything else that sparkles. For inspiration, please turn to the “Shimmer & Shine” feature in our March/April 2010 issue. This two-week challenge will run through midnight (MDT) on Monday, April 19. Click HERE for all the details! And don’t forget…today is the last day to enter our Go-to Sketch Challenge #1! All entries must be submitted by midnight (MDT) tonight!
P.P.S. It’s time to announce the three winners from my Countdown to Go-to Sketches Week post!
1. Le Anne (April 2, 7:03 a.m.)
2. Sonja (April 3, 4:46 p.m.)
3. Tami (April 2, 2:20 p.m.)
Congrats, winners! You’ve each won some fun goodies from the Easter Bunny! I’ll be contacting you shortly to get your mailing addresses. Thanks to all who left comments!
Welcome to Magazine Monday! Spring is officially here. In honor of this season of new beginnings, we’ve got something new and exciting to announce to all of our crafty friends. Yep, we’re launching another monthly gallery challenge and this one is all about sketches!
With our new special issue Go-to Sketches going on sale tomorrow, we just had to take advantage of all the hype. This magazine features 282 projects created from sketches designed by our Paper Crafts Go-to Gals. In fact, each of the six Gals designed 11 sketches, so you have a total of 66 sketches to jumpstart your creativity.
How Each Challenge Will Work:
Each month our regular gallery challenge will begin the first Monday of the month and run for two weeks. Those of you who love playing along with this challenge, you’ll still have plenty of time to submit your entries. On the third Monday of the month (just as the regular gallery challenge is ending), we’ll launch our new Go-to Sketch Challenge. Featuring two sketches from those seen in Go-to Sketches, this challenge will run for two weeks and end on the first Monday of each month – right when we begin a regular gallery challenge!
Since today happens to be the third Monday of the month, we’re just finishing up our March Gallery Challenge. This babies and brides-themed challenge will end at midnight (MDT) tonight, so you still have time to play along. But if you’d like to get a headstart on our new Go-to Sketch Challenge, you’ve come to the right place! Here’s the two sketches you’ll be designing with this month:
Super fun, right? If you would like to see what other designers have done with these sketches, turn to p. 9 in Go-to Sketches for interpretations of Teri’s sketch and p. 33 for projects using Maren’s sketch. (If you don’t happen to have your copy yet, skedaddle over to your nearest bookstore. I hear it’s already out on some of the magazine shelves! And it’s going fast!)
And just like our regular gallery challenge, at the end of two weeks, we’ll be picking three winners who will each receive a free 1-year subscription to Paper Crafts magazine or the special issue of their choice. These winners will also be spotlighted on this blog for all the world to see!
P.S. If you’re ever confused on where to find our monthly challenges, just click on the links to the left of this post. Here you’ll find all the details, such as start/end dates and the theme/sketch inspiration for each month.)
P.P.S. It’s time to announce the five winners of my March/April I-Spy post:

Today is a GREAT day! Not only am I feeling the warm spring sun, but it’s also the birthday of fellow Paper Crafts Go-to Gal, Betsy Veldman.
In case I haven’t mentioned this before, Betsy’s one amazing paper crafter.
Not only is she brilliantly inspiring, but she’s always making masterpieces on 4.25 x 5.5 cardstock that make us drool with delight. (To see exactly what I mean, hop on over to her blog. She just posted some adorable Easter cards that feature sentiments and images she took from a vintage children’s dictionary. I think I am in love!)
Besides an amazing paper crafter, Betsy’s astonishingly beautiful, inside and out. I swear that girl NEVER takes a bad picture…and believe me, I’ve tried to capture one! Isn’t she gorgeous? I think she might be turning 24 today! 🙂
So cheers to you, my sweet, creative friend! Enjoy your special day.
Be sure to leave a comment wishing Betsy a happy birthday. Go-to Gals Teri Anderson and Kim Kesti also have a little something for our lovely Betsy, so be sure to hop on over and see what they have created. If you’re inspired to craft something in Betsy’s honor, link it up here so we can all enjoy it!
Paper Crafts Go-to Gal

Welcome to Freebie Friday! I hope you’re enjoying this first week of March as we inch closer and closer to spring. Even though a lovely snowstorm greeted me and my unprepared wardrobe today, I’m still confident that warmer weather is right around the corner. And that makes me a happy girl!
Do you know what else makes me happy? Cosmo Cricket’s three new CHA releases: Material Girl, Joy Ride and Garden Variety. If you haven’t had a chance to preview these delightful collections, they’re quintessential Cosmo Cricket: bright, happy and full of paper crafting potential.
Do you know who makes me happy? Our talented Paper Crafts Go-to Gals who are so supportive of our magazine, each other and you, our loyal readers. So it was no surprise at all when I rattled off an e-mail yesterday saying, “Has anyone played with Cosmo’s new lines?” And Maren instantly chimed in with, “I have cards with all three collections. I’ll send them your way.” And now you understand the “go-to” part of their titles!
Way to go, Maren! I love all three of these collections for different reasons, but I think Garden Variety is my current favorite…at least for today. I especially love the product description on the Cosmo web site: “Here, the strawberries smile, the peas are friends and the chicks wear bonnets.” And all I can say to that is…well, wouldn’t they smile and be friends? It’s a Cosmo kind of day!
And since you’re all my friends and I want to make you smile, today I’m giving away all three Cosmo Cricket collections! Leave a comment telling me which product line is your current favorite. Are you a Material Girl, out for a Joy Ride or just another Garden Variety paper crafter? All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Sunday, March 7.
I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again: I’m a bargain shopper. I love stretching a dollar and getting the best possible deal I can find.
This is precisely why I love the Stamp It! 3 Ways section of our latest special issue Stamp It! Cards. I’m always drawn to the creativity and diversity of three projects that all use one stamp set (talk about stretching your supplies AND your dollar).
Our designers are experts at thinking outside the box when it comes to techniques and occasions that seem to magically appear from a single stamp set. Take the Grow Love, Plant a Tree set from My Favorite Things:
Have I converted you to the ways of saving money while still making oodles of cards? If not, I’ve got a few more tricks up my sleeve. The Paper Crafts Go-to Gals have joined forces to show you the diversity of two more stamp sets. Three gals made cards from one stamp set and three gals made cards from another set. Visit each of their blogs and discover how easy it is to maximize your stamps with a bit of technique and a lot of creativity!
And since this week is all about celebrating stamping, I can’t leave without offering one whopper of a prize. One lucky winner will win ALL SIX STAMP SETS featured in Stamp It! 3 Ways. That’s right, someone will win:
- Everyday Button Bits set from Papertrey Ink
- Harmonious Sprig stamp from Unity Stamp Co.
- On the Desk set from Cornish Heritage Farms
- Margaret set from Kodomo
- Grow Love, Plant a Tree set from My Favorite Things
- Spiro Garden set from Technique Tuesday
If that’s not enough, you can enter to win SEVEN TIMES! Please leave a comment here and on the blogs of all six Paper Crafts Go-to Gals. Each time you leave a comment you will be entered to win. As an extra incentive, all Go-to Gals will be giving away copies of Stamp It! Cards on their blogs. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Friday, Feb. 26.
P.S. Today on Moxie Fab World, Cath is featuring an “Ask Around” with Jennifer McGuire. There’s also a chance to win some fabulous Hero Arts stamps!
P.P.S. It’s time to announce the three winners from Jennifer’s You, My Friends, Are STAMPERS post!
1. Kelly Sas (Feb. 23, 7:32 a.m.)
2. Rebecca MI (Feb. 23, 8:31 a.m.)
3. Bev J. (Feb. 23, 7:20 p.m.)
Congrats, winners! You’ve each won a fun prize package from American Crafts and a copy of Stamp It! Cards! Kelly will be contacting you shortly to get your mailing addresses. Thanks to all who left comments!
I know it’s cliché, but time flies when you’re having fun. I distinctly remember talking with the Paper Crafts team and dreaming up a blog full of interactive challenges, beautiful pictures and prizes galore! Sure enough, two blinks of an eye and one year later here we are!
One of our goals when we concepted this blog was to encourage people to serve those around them. After all, card making is innately generous. We make cards for our loved ones to celebrate events, give condolences and simply say “hi.”
As I think back over the past 12 months, we’ve not only had the chance to give back, but we’ve also had a lot of fun doing it. So put on your magical time machine hats (you’ve all got one, right?) and join me for a quick trip down memory lane.
Last Fall Kelly joined forces with some crafty friends to crop for Cystic Fibrosis. Not only did all the proceeds go to a great cause, but it was also a chance to meet new people and create into the wee hours of the morning!
In November we continued our tradition of decorating and donating a tree (complete with oodles of donations from manufacturers and designers) to the Festival of Trees. All the money raised at this event goes to the patients at Primary Children’s Medical Center, and over the past three years our trees have made more than $5000 for this great cause.
Even our Go-to Gals got into the act this year! Ms. Maren shared a delicious assortment of chocolate-covered creations (accompanied by a hearty dose of papery goodness) ideal for teacher gifts. With two former teachers on our team, we love and respect the fine people who teach our children each day.
In December we joined forces with Creating Keepsakes magazine and Creativity Heals. This program encourages people to donate time, creativity or extra crafting supplies towards improving the lives of others. We invited all of you to donate cards to Operation Write Home and were blown away by the generosity you showed on our blog and Facebook pages. We’ve been associated with this charity for years and love their support for our nation’s armed forces. We also donated hundreds of cards to this charity following our World Card Making Day Card Contest in October.
At each turn we have been struck by the kindness and willingness to give all of you readers have shown. Thanks for making 2009 a year of giving back. As a thank you I’d like to give ONE lucky person two copies of our new special issue Stamp It! Cards, two Fiskars stamp sets and two of our sassy Betty t-shirts. All that I ask is that you keep one prize package for yourself and give the other to a friend. To be eligible to win, please leave a comment telling me how you like to give back to those around you. Perhaps we’ll be able to take something YOU do and work it into 2010. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Wednesday, Feb. 3.
Thanks and love,
1. Diane S. (Jan. 29, 7:59 p.m.)
2. Carisa (Jan. 28, 3:17 p.m.)
3. Brandy Jarvis (Jan. 28, 2:12 p.m.)
