I know it’s early to be thinking of Mother’s Day, but my Mom lives in Canada. And even though I can drive there in 12 hours, it takes weeks to get a package to her!

So, I’m getting my little (and light!) goodies ready to ship off today and needed to create a card. I have a stash of Mother’s Day cards I created for the magazine over the years, but I feel a good daughter would create something fresh and custom made just for her!

My Mother is NOT a card maker, scrapbooker, papercrafter or anything else crafty. I guess I inherited that gene from my Dad! She is, however, a great cook and a passionate gardener. So, it was convenient that we got a wonderland snowfall last week that covered all my flowers and blossoming trees with snow. I spent an hour taking pictures of it all.

This picture of snow crystals clinging to my pear blossoms was so pretty I knew I wanted to use it. I found the perfect quote on Google and added the text with Photoshop. Canada has long, hard winters… this card reflects the hope of spring and will also let her know how much her daughter loves her.

If you’d like to play around with the picture and add your own custom text (or if you’d just like to use it as is), download it at http://myeyeqdownloads.shutterfly.com.

See beauty and share love,

Welcome to another Magazine Monday! Looks like everyone enjoyed our giftastic blog hop on Friday. We’ll be announcing the three lucky winners of the Cricut, Your Story and Yudu tomorrow, so make sure you check back with us! And don’t forget… 225 Cards & Gifts also hits newsstands tomorrow! Today is the last day you can preorder it and save 10%!

As many of you know, one of our own editors had a milestone birthday last week. Susan R. Opel turned the big 4-0 and celebrated by taking a road trip to beautiful San Francisco with her sister Beth. Even though Susan was out of the office on her actual birthday, she had a lot of fun surprises waiting for her when she returned on Wednesday.

Since Susan is a big fan of American Idol (dare I say obsessed?) and she recently joined a band as their lead singer, it was a no brainer when it came to deciding the theme of her birthday sign and cake.

Since Susan is a big fan of American Idol (dare I say obsessed?) and she recently joined a band as their lead singer, it was a no brainer when it came to deciding her birthday theme. Notice how Randy, Cara, Paula and Simon even made an appearance!

Stace, our art director extraordinaire, worked her birthday magic yet again. She found this look-alike Susan doll and trimmed her fiery red hair to match our birthday girl’s!

And the best part of this cake... it was key lime pie-flavored! Susans favorite!

And the best part of this cake... it was key lime pie-flavored! Susan's favorite!

And our always fashion-conscious Susan even managed to match her outfit to her cake that day! How did she know?

In the words of Randy: Yo, that cake was the bomb, dog!

And Stace even made custom cake plates bearing Susan’s next hit record. Is she amazing or what?

Kelly Clarkson, eat your heart out! Theres a new Idol in town!

Are you a scrapbook paper-aholic? Come on! Raise your hand and repeat after me: “My name is {fill in the blank} and I have a paper obsession.” It’s okay. I’ll be standing right next to you uttering the very same words. This is a common problem among paper crafters, and I want you to know that you are not alone.

Patterned papers come in so many gorgeous and luscious varieties, and I have to admit that the large patterns often knock my socks off with their vibrant color combinations and bold statements. As a scrapbooker, I knew how to tame those papers to use in my layouts, but with a card maker’s even smaller canvas, some of our favorite papers and patterns become only another piece of paper in our vast and unused collection.

So maybe we need to make a change! Maybe we need to find a way to use those papers and actually SHARE them with our favorite people through gift giving.

I created this quick and eye-catching gift bag using some of my favorite large patterned paper from American Crafts. It appears on p. 41 in 225 Cards & Gifts.

In three easy steps, you can doll up a kraft bag and be the envy of every gift giver.

1. Choose your paper, give it a little hug for being so pretty, fussy cut a section that is particularly appealing, and adhere it.
2. Pop on a premade rhinestone sentiment (mine is by Me & My Big Ideas).
3. Slide a sparkly ribbon slide on a ribbon (mine is velvet) and staple it to the bag.

Simple, elegant, versatile. This bag could be used for a birthday, a retirement, a bon voyage, or a wedding shower. And why not a graduation, an anniversary, a bachelorette party, or a hostess gift? Switch out the sentiment and the pattern, and you could turn this into a bag for a graduation, a thank you, a baby shower, or a child’s birthday. And the best part of all? You actually USED that gorgeous paper! I’m so proud of you!

Now, I’m particularly fond of gifts this time of year since I just celebrated my 40th birthday last Sunday. My sister and I took a road trip to San Francisco last week to celebrate. Allow me to share some highlights of our trip!

San Francisco and its environs have so many iconic sites and activities: wine-tasting in Napa, AT&T Park (Home of the San Francisco Giants), Muir Woods, the Painted Ladies (you might recognize them from the opener of Full House), The Golden Gate Bridge, Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf.

So, what would you say if I said that I’ve got a fancy little prize package all lined up for three lucky commenters who tell me what she’d like to receive in this little gift bag? Your wish can be big or small (it really doesn’t even matter if it would realistically fit in the bag or not because it’s a wish!). And money is no object! Please respond by midnight (MDT) on Sunday, April 26. We’ll announce the winner on Monday’s blog post. Good luck!

Three lucky winners will receive the following prizes: A copy of 225 Cards & Gifts, an assortment of patterned papers, some pretty embellishments from Me & My Big Ideas, and two Simply Sent Card kits from Stampin’ Up! which each include one stamp set, three colors of ink, pre-scored cards with envelopes, and ribbon. Why not make a set of cards and give them as a gift?

And if that weren’t enough, I just happen to know Cath is giving away some super cute crafting kits from Cosmo Cricket on Moxie Fab World today! You better hop on over!

Yours in festive gift-giving (and receiving for that matter)!
Susan

P.S. It’s time to announce the two winners from my May/June Tips, Tools, & Techniques Trivia post from last week! Here they are:

I feel really lucky that my turn to write a blog post fell on this exciting Cards & Gifts Week. Creating gifts for my friends and loved ones never gets old to me. It’s so fun to see their faces light up when they receive such a gift.

Sometimes creating a gift for a neighbor, or someone you don’t know as well, becomes more of a challenge. When in doubt, I take a humorous turn. Every loves a giggle. I created this gift set with a new neighbor in mind. It would work equally as well for someone who has recently been ill, or just for someone who needs a pick-me-up. Hey! Did you know it’s Administrative Professionals Day today? How fun would it be to give this gift to an awesome co-worker?

I admit that I’ve definitely been a slow adopter of gift cards as a gift. To me, it’s always seemed so impersonal and sort of a cop-out to grab one at the cashier station and then just hand it over to the recipient. Convenient? Of course. But personal? Not so much.

If you’re with me on that, let me tell you about something extra wonderful in our newest special issue 225 Cards & Gifts: an entire feature on wrapping a gift card in some clever paper crafting love! There are 26 original ideas to make a gift card into something that shows you care, and I know I’ll be using every one of these ideas in some way.

I especially love this one by Anabelle O’Malley, because it’s a gift for now (mmmm…tasty treats!) and a gift card for later:

Isn’t this fresh design just perfect for honoring mom on Mother’s Day?

Isn’t this fresh design just perfect for honoring mom on Mother’s Day?

These tins are so versatile, too – just look at what Nichole Heady of Papertrey Ink did with a similar tin:

After the gift card is removed, the box becomes a comfy resting place for special pieces of jewelry!

After the gift card is removed, the box becomes a comfy resting place for special pieces of jewelry!

Nichole and her eye for all things gorgeous even took this project to the loveliest of levels by adding a card, a bracelet and a poem:

And guess what? Since it’s a special week around here, we’ve got some of these tins from Papertrey Ink to give away! Leave me a comment by midnight MDT this Thursday, April 23 letting me know what gift card you give most often. Five random (and lucky!) winners will each get a window tin and a large hinged tin to gussy up a few gift cards themselves! And a copy of 225 Cards & Gifts!

And make sure you head over to Moxie Fab World today! Cath is giving away gorgeous flowers, ribbons and trims from nine different manufacturers!

P.S.  Speaking of celebrations, tomorrow is Administrative Professionals Day and we’ll be honoring our own Editorial Assistant Brenda Peterson with an extra dose of Paper Crafts love. She is the glue that holds things together around here.

We’re giving her an extra cheer, too, for losing 67 pounds and being healthier than she’s ever been. We couldn’t be more proud of her!

Welcome to Magazine Monday and day one of Cards & Gifts Week! As mentioned last Friday, we’ve once again teamed up with Cath and her Moxie Fab World blog to celebrate our latest special issue 225 Cards & Gifts!

On sale April 28th, this magazine features heartfelt gifts for family, friends, coworkers, neighbors, teachers, coaches, and anyone else you’d like to acknowledge in your life. The six chapters include card sets, gift cards, gift wraps, food wraps, home décor, and miscellaneous gifts. Each day this week we’ll spotlight one of these fun chapters and give away some fantastic prizes.

Today we’ll be spotlighting the “Best Cards Come in Batches” chapter and the uber talented Maren Benedict, who has NINE glorious projects in this issue. It’s hard to believe Maren is relatively new to our publications. She first popped up in our March/April 2009 issue and most recently in Stamp It! Cards, where she had 13 cards! Not too bad for a newbie! So sit back, relax and enjoy getting to know Maren Benedict! She’s actually going to reveal what intimidates her!

Maren Benedict

Maren Benedict

1. What is your most difficult paper crafting challenge?

Scrapbooking. I would love to do it more, but I’m intimidated by the space and time it takes for me to complete a page. Plus, it is never ending and I feel so behind already (sort of like laundry)! Luckily, I have discovered mini albums! They are the perfect way for me to document my children’s lives as I slowly get more comfortable with scrapping.

2. What is your favorite paper crafting supply?

I am a proud paper girl! Bold, subtle, flower prints, stripes, polka dots, grid… I love it all! Manufacturers continue to feed my love by coming out with amazing new lines. Fabulous paper makes me happy.

3. Name three Paper Crafts designers whose styles you like and tell me why they appeal to you.

Alisa Bangerter – I have always loved Alisa’s designs. Her projects are the perfect balance of elegance and creativity.

Debbie Olson – Debbie never ceases to amaze me with her artistic style. She has a way of making each card look like a masterpiece.

Jessica Witty – Jessica is another favorite designer of mine. She is so hip and fun. Her creations put a smile on my face.

4. You’ve had the opportunity to work with a number of different publications. How do you keep yourself organized?

In order to keep track of deadlines for calls and sending submissions off, I use an online calendar. I love how it e-mails me a schedule every morning to keep me on top of things! I also have two photo boxes: one for cards to submit and another one for cards that have been accepted. These serve as a visual reminder of what I need to get done for the day.

5. Do you have any advice for someone who’s never been published or who wants to try submitting for the first time?

Go for it! Don’t have too high of expectations, but do put yourself out there. You never know what the editors are looking for and your creation could be the perfect fit for a call! Also, be sure to submit cards that are uniquely yours. Don’t feel like you have to make cards that don’t fit your style. Create and submit creations that make you happy!

6. What is your favorite thing to paper craft and why?

I love making birthday cards for friends and family members. Each one is uniquely theirs, with colors and images that they would enjoy. It lets them know how special they are to me.

7. What design teams are you on?

I am fortunate to be a member of some amazing design teams: Unity Stamp Company, Cosmo Cricket, Lizzie Anne Designs and Jacksonbelle Embellishments

8. How would you describe your style?

I continually try to push myself to try new things so I am not sure I have a definite style, although I consider myself fairly clean and simple. I like to play around with colors and have a hard time not finishing cards off with a bow!

9. What do you like about working with Paper Crafts magazine?

I adore working with the Paper Crafts’ editors. They are so supportive and helpful. You can tell that they love their jobs. This enthusiasm for the paper crafting industry spills out in each publication!

10. Do you have a blog or online gallery? If so, please provide the URL.

http://www.zanynotcrazy.com/

Thanks, Maren! And here’s one of the nine projects Maren has published in 225 Cards & Gifts:

Maren Benedict's Hello Trees Card Set

So hopefully you’ve enjoyed getting to know Maren Benedict! Unity Stamp Company was nice enough to donate three Tiny Trinity stamp sets – the set Maren used to create the card set above. Please leave a comment below and I’ll pick three random winners to receive a stamp set and a copy of 225 Cards & Gifts. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Tuesday, April 21.

And make sure you head over to Moxie Fab World! Cath is spotlighting some gifty items from Maya Road and yes, giving a few of them away! And get ready for Jennifer’s post tomorrow on new ways to package gift cards!

And if that weren’t enough, we’re hosting another fun online contest. The Cards & Gifts Challenge officially begins right now! To play, create a Mother’s Day gift in one of these SIX categories:

  • Card Sets
  • Gift Card Holders
  • Gift Wrap
  • Food Wrap
  • Home Decor
  • Miscellaneous (journals, gift sets, notebooks, bookmarks, etc.)

Upload your project to the Cards & Gifts Week Challenge on Flickr.com by clicking here. The deadline is midnight (MST) on Monday, April 27. Make sure you identify the category you are entering in the title of your project. We will choose TWO winners in each category and feature them either here on the Paper Crafts Connection blog or on the Moxie Fab World blog on Thursday, April 30. And of course, there will be prizes!

So, as you can see, we have a lot of fun blog posts (and prizes galore!) planned for Cards & Gifts Week.

Hope to see you back here!
Kelly

P.S. It wouldn’t be Freebie Friday without free prizes, right? Since we have six chapters in 225 Cards & Gifts, I’m giving away six K&Company collections! Leave a comment telling me the best gift you’ve ever received. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Sunday, April 19. I’ll announce the six winners on Monday, April 20!

You could take home one of these fun K&Company collections!
