2010 is right around the corner and while I typically don’t make resolutions, I do have a personal goal to try several new things every year. 2009 held many changes for me – the least being changing jobs. To a paper crafting company, nonetheless. I figured since I was on such a roll, I should continue down the slippery path of crafting and give it a try myself.

Thanks to the guidance of my co-workers (Holla!), I have developed a healthy starter crafting kit. I figure there’s no time like the present to squeeze in one last experiment…er…I mean experience before the clock hits twelve.

I recently spent a morning making my first handmade card. (Angel choir chimes in.) It took me a long time to get going because I kept getting distracted with all my new crafting tools. It sort of felt like a second Christmas! I developed quite the pile of supplies on my kitchen counter and my cat let curiosity get the best of him, so he came to check out the fanfare.

Wink: Woman, what is this dye-cutting, thicker-sticking, card-cutting, brad-pushing, glue-smearing on my countertop?

Me: I thought I would try making a card. You know, see what the fuss is about.

Wink: The fuss is the mess I’m about to make by lying all over your paper scraps and kicking supplies around. I’m hoping a few cat hairs will add to the charm, if not the validity of this first-ever card making event.

I used Beatriz Jennings’ Silver Snow Card from Holiday Cards & More, Volume 3 as my inspiration.

While my creation doesn’t do hers justice, I figure we’ve all got to start somewhere, right?

Whimsical Snow Card by Holly Mills

By the way, Card Creations: Start to Finish, Volume 2 goes on sale today! It was my first project when I started working at Paper Crafts. When I showed my desk copy to my folks, they acted a bit surprised and impressed. When I inquired more about their reaction, my dad said,“Wow, you actually have proof of a job. I thought you just colored all day.” So run out tomorrow and buy the latest Paper Crafts coloring book!

Keep smiling,
Holly

P.S. Stay tuned for our fun Card Creations: Start to Finish Week (Jan. 11-15) on this blog and Moxie Fab World!

P.P.S. Speaking of Moxie Fab World, Cath is counting down to 2010 by showing you a sampling of all her moxie fab posts from 2009. Hop on over to weigh in on your favorites and possibly win a prize!

I’m so happy that you’ve joined me for the third and final installment of my “Back to School” blog series. As I continue to share with you ideas on how to use each Paper Crafts magazine, I’d like to touch base on style. I think we all have one, but some are not as easy to recognize as others, as many cross over.

There’s graphic, shabby chic (or vintage), fun and cute and so many more. You might find that you are drawn to the same style that you, yourself create. I think most of us can appreciate a beautiful card in any style.

I pulled out my September/October 2009 issue to find some “style” samples that caught my eye.

Heres Teris clean and graphic Happy Haunting Card.

Here's Teri Anderson's clean and graphic Happy Haunting Card.

I think the pumpkin card created by Teri Anderson is absolutely adorable. It’s clean, graphic and oh SO cute! But let’s see how this card would look if it were made with a shabby chic style in mind, which mostly consists of patterns, distressing, some playful buttons and jute or twine.

And heres my shabby chic Welcome Home card.

And here's my shabby chic Welcome Home card.

I kept Teri’s outstanding color combination and design, but instead of solid cardstock, I replaced those papers with patterned papers. I stamped a pattern onto the base kraft cardstock. You can alter solid papers with stamps, rub-ons or doodles to create your own patterned papers. Make sure that there is a white core if you choose to sand the edges. I changed the topic completely and went with a “welcome home” theme (the possibilities are endless). I find that small, subtle patterns typically work best.

Now let’s change it around and see what a shabby chic card looks like in a graphic style.

Heres Beatriz Jennings shabby chic Happy Halloween Card.

Here's Beatriz Jennings' shabby chic Happy Halloween Card.

“Happy Halloween” created by Beatriz Jennings nailed the shabby chic look. Going graphic means solid, clean lines. Usually some bold black and minimal, simplistic embellishments.

Like Teri’s card, I kept the same design and color combination as Beatriz did on her sweet card. I pulled out my cardstock colors and got to work. (I couldn’t resist using a polka dot cardstock though). I punched holes in the cream cardstock to let the black show through. Circles and dots are very graphic. I substituted the polka dot ribbon for a bold striped one and used bold black letters for the sentiment. I decided to add touches of orange and yellow to draw in my colors.

And heres my clean and graphic Hi Card.

And here's my clean and graphic Hi Card.

If the clean and graphic style appeals to you, why not make a card and enter it in Paper Crafts’ September Gallery Challenge? If you need some inspiration, check out the “Graphically Speaking” feature in the September/October issue. You’ve got until Monday, Sept. 28 to upload your project image HERE.

I hope that I have given you something new to think about. Please take a closer look at each Paper Crafts magazine because they truly offer a fountain of creative inspiration. I appreciate you sharing some of your time with me today.

Kim Hughes,
Paper Crafts Go-to Gal

P.S. I’d love to hear what card-making style you naturally gravitate towards. Leave a comment and I’ll pick three winners to receive a copy of our September/October issue. All comments must be received by midnight (MST) on Tuesday, Sept. 22.

P.P.S. It’s time to announce the winner from Kelly’s Freebie Friday – Giving Back post!

As I sat down to write this post I could swear I heard the song, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas.” It sure does feel like we’re having a merry little Christmas this week as we celebrate the fact that our beloved, tried-and-true, ultimate resource for paper crafting the holidays, Holiday Cards & More, Volume 4,  is finally on sale. And not a minute too soon, for as we all know, a paper-crafted Christmas takes some time and attention to prepare!

Inspiring your holidays since 2006

I’m here today to give you a sneak peek at the ornament section, and I couldn’t be more thrilled because ornaments are totally my thing. Since the birth of my oldest child 23 years ago, my family has been adding a unique, special ornament to our tree. We choose a Sunday a couple of weeks before Christmas, we load up the car’s CD player with our favorite carols, and we drive up the canyon to Park City where we have breakfast at our favorite joint and shop the quaint snowy streets for the coveted, group-decided-upon, most memorable ornament for that year.

How memorable would it be, however, to create handmade ornaments like these this year? I wouldn’t give up our tradition, of course, but the inclusion of handmade ornaments would be a lovely, heartfelt addition to our tree of memories:

Three Vintage Sign Ornaments by Joanne Allison, p. 157

Jingle Bell Christmas Ornament by Beatriz Jennings and Happy Holiday Co. Star Ornament by Sherry Wright, p. 151

Jingle Bell Christmas Ornament by Beatriz Jennings and Happy Holiday Co. Star Ornament by Sherry Wright, p. 151

Don’t these conjure images of a Norman Rockwell Christmas? And this is just the tip of the proverbial treetop, if you will, friends. The ornaments section of Holiday Cards & More is chock full of ornaments in every style and color palette you can imagine—something for everyone, as jolly ol’ St. Nick might say.

And because we’re all in the Christmas spirit this week, I’d love to give away the stamp set (below) from Cornish Heritage Farms that was used to create the Three Vintage Sign Ornaments. I’ve got three sets to give away, along with a copy of Holiday Cards & More, Volume 4. Just leave me a comment that tells us one of your family holiday traditions by Friday, August 28 at midnight MDT, and Christmas could come a bit early for you this year, like it has here!

Leave me a comment to win this great stamp set!

Before you go, don’t forget to stop by the Moxie Fab World today! We’re stretching our holiday style in Holiday Cards & More Week with a week’s worth of challenges that you won’t want to miss! I’ve got some g-o-r-g-e-o-u-s classy and elegant sneak peeks for you today!

Looking forward to hearing about your traditions,

Welcome to Freebie Friday and the last day of our Card Creations 7 Week celebration! Hopefully you’ve enjoyed your sneak peek of Card Creations, Volume 7 both here and on Moxie Fab World. We’ve had so much fun spotlighting this incredible issue and hope you’ve been sufficiently inspired to go make your own little masterpieces of wonder.

For those of you just joining us today, make sure to read all of our fun posts this week. From talking blossoms and buttons with designer Carla Peicheff to being tickled pink to tying on aprons with Kim Kesti and hitting the jackpot with Susan R. Opel, we’ve had a grand ol’ time! And special thanks go out to all the manufacturers who’ve donated their fabulous product for our daily giveaways! As always, your generosity is much appreciated!

Today I’m going to spotlight a few of my favorite cards from CC7, which is really hard to do since there are so many amazing designs! But this first one has a special place in my heart since it was created by a humble editor whose named rhymes with “jelly” (little inside joke around here!).

Yes, little ol’ me pulled out her scraps and created this card that features one of my favorite Emily Dickinson quotes. I made it for my dear 88-year-old Grandma who lost her sweetheart this last February. Since she has the most beautiful singing voice, I knew SIStv’s Music in the Morning paper would resonate with her and “hopefully” put a smile on her face and in her heart.

P. Kelly Smiths Hope Has Feathers Card from CC7

P. Kelly Smith's Hope Has Feathers Card from CC7

My next two favorite cards are all about friendship. These are the kinds of cards I would love to give my best gal pals. And, of course, I would be thrilled to be on the receiving end too! I think it’s the punch of orange and the simple use of the word “friend” that works so brilliantly here.

Maren Benedicts Friends Tree Card and Dawn McVeys Friends Card from CC7

Maren Benedict's Friends Tree Card and Dawn McVey's Friends Card from CC7

And because we’re all friends in this wonderfully connective industry, I’d like you to meet 15 of my friends who just happen to have gorgeous cards in CC7:

  • Charlene Austin
  • Ashley Newell
  • Teri Anderson
  • Kim Hughes
  • Carla Peicheff

  • Betsy Veldman
  • Kim Kesti
  • Alli Miles

  • Sherry Wright
  • Debbie Olsen
  • Layle Koncar
  • Beatriz Jennings

These talented ladies are also directly related to our big giveaway today! Yes, we’re having another blog hop! Each of these designers will be spotlighting one of the cards they created for CC7. They’ll be talking about products, techniques and anything else their little creative minds desire. Each time you comment on a different blog (one comment per blog, please), your name gets entered to win a free copy of CC7 (there’s 15 up for grabs!) AND one of the ten amazing prize packages we’re giving away here and on Moxie Fab World!

Here on Paper Crafts Connection, we’re giving away five fabulous prize packages! Each prize set contains a collection from Doodlebug Design, Autumn Leaves, Anna Griffin, SEI and Sassafras Lass.

This is ONE prize package! We actually ran out of room on the table, so you can’t see the product from Sassafras Lass!

Welcome to Freebie Friday! First of all, I want to give a big shout out to those who responded to Matt’s Lone Design Man post yesterday. I know he was truly surprised and humbled by all of your comments. Who knew this “average, every day, run-of-the-mill kind of guy” would be such a big hit!

And ladies, he will be writing more blog posts in the future. With comments like the following, how can I keep Matt hidden away?

  • It’s really refreshing when you meet a guy in the paper crafting world!
  • I love the amazing graphics in the magazine and often stare at them for inspiration and composition just as much as the projects themselves.
  • Thank you so much for being such a real kind of guy with a great perspective on co-workers and life.

If you haven’t left a comment on Matt’s post, you have until midnight tonight to be entered to win a collection of magazines featuring his amazing openers. (After midnight, you can still leave a comment telling Matt how great he is, but unfortunately, you won’t be eligible to win.)

You know who else is great? Dear ol’ Mom. My own mother likes to tell people she’s my older sister. And since we’re only 20 years apart, she usually gets away with it! Maybe I should pay more attention to the moisturizer talk that goes on here at the office!

Heres Beatriz Jennings Tulip Card and A Mothers Love Card

Here's Beatriz Jennings' Tulip Card and A Mother's Love Card

I just love Beatriz’ soft and shabby style! And I love how she incorporated a flower into the design of her butterfly card. So clever! Speaking of flowers… have you ordered some for your Mom yet? If not, never fear… I’m giving them away! Technically they’re not real flowers, but they can definitely be used on Mother’s Day cards, gifts, etc. And the best part… they won’t wilt!

Three lucky winners will each receive this flower-themed prize package featuring product from Maya Road, Luxe Designs, Sandylion and Sharpie!

Leave me a comment telling me the best advice your mother/mother figure ever gave you. Three random winners will receive the fun prize package shown above. All comments must be received by midnight on Sunday, May 10. The winners will be announced on Monday’s blog.

P.S. Our May Gallery Challenge launched on Monday and already we have some spectacular projects! To participate or view the Mother’s Day-themed cards, please click here. The deadline for this challenge is not until Monday, May 25, so make a card for Mom and then upload it to our gallery!
