Susan R. Opel
I’ll never forget the day that I first talked to Brandy Jesperson on the phone before I moved from Indiana to Utah to start my job at Paper Crafts magazine. I accepted the position on April 1st but had to finish out the school year and fulfill my duties at my teaching job before I headed west; however, Brandy wanted me to get my feet wet by writing a couple of sections of Card Creations 6.
One day a box arrived on my doorstep with a VERY large binder inside. Tucked in ten protective sleeves I found cards from Jennifer Hansen, Ashley Harris, Kandis Smith, Tracey Odachowski, Stefanie Hamilton, Davinie Fiero, Becky Olsen, Danielle Flanders, Michele Boyer, and Debbie Olson – the entire Congratulations and Easter sections of Card Creations 6. It was pretty amazing to be able to touch these beautiful creations that would be going into this special issue.
Before I could get to work writing, I had a garage sale to conduct, a house to pack up, and finals to give, but when my good friend Tina Albertson (a talented scrapbooker and card maker whose card was on the cover of Card Creations 5, BTW) came to my garage sale in Fort Wayne, IN, I pulled out that big binder, and we looked at everything with awe.
I slaved over writing the instructions and supply lists for my two sections giving each card a snazzy and befitting name and trying to very carefully follow all of the directions. Brandy would probably agree that it wasn’t stellar, but it was such a whole new ballgame to me! And I was trying to write it all while administering final exams. Shh – don’t tell my former principal.
Fast forward to early June of 2009… and it’s time to introduce Card Creations 7 to the world, and now I am a full-fledged part of the Paper Crafts team. It’s been so fun seeing this issue through from the concept meeting to the call for submissions to the submissions judging to the projects rolling in to the writing (which I am MUCH better at now – I did more than 20 cards this time!) to the hand off to the proofs to the copy of the issue on my desk. And what makes it SUPER cool is that this time I have 12 of my very own creations in this issue. I thought I’d share three of my favorites!

Susan R. Opel's Fabulous Card from CC7
I’m pretty darn dramatic (if you hadn’t already noticed!), so this Heidi Swapp damask sticker really spoke to me. I decided to pair it with some lustrous damask paper from Hambly, black satin ribbon, and some sassy red alligator paper from Fibermark. Pop on some contrasting and cute American Crafts letter stickers and you have a great card to send to your long distance BFF!

Susan R. Opel's Good Luck Card from CC7
This card was totally inspired by the cherries (also from Heidi Swapp). I tried to think out of the box on this one and steered clear of “Life is a Bowl of Cherries” or “Happy Birthday with a Cherry on Top.” Instead, I channeled my inner Vegas girl (I lived there for three years) and went with a casino theme. The inside of this card reads: “Hope you hit the jackpot!” I sent this to a friend who recently started a new job.

Susan R. Opel's Life is Good Card from CC7
Pair this amazing graphic paper from GCD Studios with some bling and a fun phrase from Scrap In Style TV (one of my favorite spots on the web), and you’ve got yourself a quick and funky card for many occasions. Hmmm, looks like I was on a little bit of a red, white and black kick, huh?
From the three cards I shared, you can probably tell that I like dramatic and graphic cards best. But you’ll find a multitude of styles in Card Creations 7 – that’s what is so AWESOME about this definitive card idea book. From shabby to girly to fun and cute to classic to pretty to simple, we’ve got what you’re looking for!
Leave me a comment and tell me what YOUR favorite style is. I’ll choose three lucky winners who will win a copy of Card Creations 7, as well as the Label Love, Morning Milk, and Window Shopping paper collections (all used in CC7!) and the Rainbow Sushi Phrase Stickers used in my Life is Good card from Scrap In Style TV and the delicious Chianti paper collection (used in my Life is Good card) and epoxy stickers in Ravishing Reds and Shades of Black from GCD Studios. Get those responses in by midnight MDT on Sunday, June 28, and Kelly will announce the winner on Monday!

Three lucky winners will take home this prize package from SIStv and GCD Studios!
Bravo for Lucky Card Creations 7!
Susan
P.S. It’s time to announce the three winners from Brandy’s Tickled Pink post! Here they are in no particular order:

I tend to go simple and clean but try to add some elegance to it with lace borders or satin ribbons. But I like making all types of cards so am still discovering my own style!

My style varies a lot too… I think that sometimes I am drawn to a really fun, funky style whereas other times I drool over vintage chic. I think the best way to sum up my style is that it’s “Joni style”…
June 25, 2009 at 6:03 am

I am now more into vintage and retro style cards but it keeps changing as new products show up in the stores…

Hmmm, my style is…well, actually, I have no idea! It goes all over the place. But I think I tend to go for the “simple is better” approach. Coincidentally, I’ve really been working the red, black and white too! Although I think my reds are more of a deep burgundy. Mainly because someone gave me a whole stack of that color paper! =)
June 25, 2009 at 6:14 am

My “style” varies as well. But when I look back at my paper crafting, I tend to gravitate towards clean, simple, tailored designs -or- completely eclectic and funky.

Darlene L
I think it is hard to define my style. I am all over the place at times. However I just say when I’m struggling with ideas, I usually gravitate to the more classy and elegant styles.
Thanks for the great giveaways.

I love looking at all cards. I have often thought more is better. But lately I’ve been particularly drawn to the “simply refined” cards. You know, the ones that are simple, yet there are lots of details that were considered and the card has a refined look about it.
June 25, 2009 at 7:07 am

What beautiful cards!
I tend to like cute or girly cards. Simple and classic is also a style I do a lot of. But I am always scouting the new idea books and mags for different ideas.

Congrats on living your dream, Susan … so very happy for you. I think my style would be life imitating art. I love finding/taking photos of just everyday normal things and making cards out of them. Like my cats sitting in the window, my father sleeping in his recliner, or a tree on a foggy morning … whatever captures my eye. And then coming up with appropriate cards to fit the pics. The possibilities are endless.

I find my overall style to be pretty simple, but with cards, since it’s a smaller “canvas” to work with, I tend to layer more, add more embellishments, than a typical layout.

My style is eclectic. I draw inspiration from the occasion or the recipient for each card I make. I think Clean and Graphic is more to my taste–I don’t go for a LOT of embellishment.

I go through stages with my card creating style. Mostly that is so because I am open to knew ideas and explore different styles. I am just leaving grundge for a bit to explore bolds and I am liking it so much. It is fun thinking outside the box and taking an adventure that makes me a little uncomfortable. I always end up glad that I did.

Very cute cards!! I guess I’m a pretty simple/clean card crafter. I don’t like too many layers on my cards — being far from family, I have to mail almost all of my cards and I’ve learned too many layers costs extra postage! Also, too many bumpy things and it won’t go through the postage meter machine and it tears. So, I play with the fun stuff when I’m sending the card in a package, but if it’s going in the mail, it’s simple and flat.

You know…I really like lots of styles. I create based on how I am feeling, so that can really do a lot to mix things up! LOL! Sometimes I do very simple, while at other times I go all out and elaborate!
June 25, 2009 at 8:48 am
SweetOrange54
Classic & elegant (think Jackie O) – just enough embellishing product to ad texture and dimension to the card, yet still let it fit inside an envelope and go through the mail. Much of what is presented on the blogs and magazines doesnt take into consideration the fact that most cards are sent through the mail to their recipient, be that recipient family, a charity organization or a board swap.

My style is definitely more on the clean & simple side. I find if the face of the card is too ‘busy’ – you can’t focus on the message or sentiment the card is intended to portray. I do like layers & distressing – - I just prefer not to go overboard with embellishments & different patterned papers.

True to my Gemini nature, my style varies according to my mood! I love all styles, and bounce from one to the another, whatever I’m in the mood for. I’ll see and like a project on the internet or in a magazine (like Paper Crafts Card Creations, my favorite!) and give it a try. Why limit yourself, I always say. That’s like always only getting vanilla ice cream, when there’s so many flavors to be had!!

It was so fun to see your cards in CC7, Susan! They’re amazing and you can easily identify your graphic, bold style. My style, on the other hand, often evolves based on my feeling (I think). Overall, I think I have a clean and simple style, but I love all kinds of styles so much that I have a tendency to try them all out from time-to-time!

Gee the other day I commented that my style was Fun & Cute, but with a look at your cards I think I am changing to Dramatic and Graphic. That’s the great thing about card making you don’t have to stick to one style all the time. Thanks for the chance to win.

Thanks for the opportunity to win!! I tend to be drawn to the simple and clean cards – and that’s what I tend to make (part of that is because my life is sooooo insane – I have four little bitty kids, LOL) BUT, by “clean and simple” I don’t mean “devoid of bling” because I looooove bling. The “Win” card above is totally faboo!!!!
And I *love* that big damask sticker on the first card. I love classic designs like that, too.

Gorgeous cards…..love the jackpot one. Very clever. My personal style is very eclectic. I like words and text and a collagey style. That being said….many of the cards I actually make tend to be brighter and simpler, befitting the recipients!!

Awesome – one of my fave cards in the mag is yours (Vegas, baby!)…thanks for sharing your talents with us!
I guess you could call my most frequently used style “Shabby Graphic”: I love to sand and distress, but I prefer to use one big element so the card isn’t too overwhelming when you look at it.

i normally to do fully embellish cards. it’s something awesome to get something in the mail that would just “pop-up” / be in 3D.
but of course, there are times (depending on the situation and purpose), when I want a card to stand out from its inside (the journaling). in this case, a “clean & simple” design is what i would achieve.
June 25, 2009 at 11:54 pm

I like simple designs with some sort of personal touch–a photo, favorite color, or something from my cricut that I hope will connect to the person receiving the card.

I like to to use distress techniques on my cards. Not to much, just so that it’s not so flat. And I love buttons. My MIL gave me a bucket full last year.

My favorite style is clean and simple–nothing too fussy. I like a simple layout, but with a little embossing or bling to give a wow factor.
